Houston Senior Living Series seminars making an impact

February 15, 2019

Two years ago, Liz McNeel had an idea. As a downsizing coach and Realtor, she noticed many of her clients faced the same challenges, had the same questions, and shared similar fears about aging.

Out of this observation, Houston Senior Living Series (HSLS) — monthly educational seminars — was born. The seminars are candid conversations focused on answers and solutions to challenges facing Houston area mature homeowners and their families.

“It started from a simple idea and the momentum continues,” said McNeel. “We started the Houston Senior Living Series in April 2017 and have gone from 25 people at our first one to consistent audiences over 60. This year we added a venue to incorporate more of the Houston area.”

The number of sponsors is increasing, and their support allows HSLS to continuing offering the free seminars.

“The fact that people have embraced this series is humbling,” McNeel said. Houston Senior Living Series has become a community builder, an excuse for seniors to gather with friends. It fills a need by bringing experts and consumers together on an even playing field.

“I came to the first one because I was curious,” said Anna Moss, a regular attendee. Now she returns because she leaves with actionable tips every time. What senior living options are available and make sense for her? What decisions need to be updated? Does her financial planning align with how she wants to live life?

“It’s been so educational,” Moss said.

Madge Dennard, who attends with her husband Fred, said, “It’s been a great learning experience. We get to ask questions, and knowing what resources are available has been very helpful.” Fred added that listening to the presenters and visiting with them afterward has helped them make several decisions that they hesitated to think about before. “Liz always tells us that she wants us to understand all our options and that’s very important,” he said.

As the owner of Steady Transitions Realty Group with Keller Williams Metropolitan, McNeel and a core group of like-minded professionals representing various industries, made it their mission to educate, equip and empower seniors. The attendees appreciate the expertise, but they also come because they feel the series presents the information in an easy to understand and respectful manner.

“Our panelists are candid and are willing to discuss the easy and difficult issues of aging and how to prepare. The goal is to give people credible resources for senior-related issues.

Houston area seniors are invited to join the 2019 series of candid conversations focused on the unique and complex senior living issues facing mature homeowners and their families.

The next seminars on The Truth About Preparing to Downsize are scheduled Feb. 15 at University Library, 14010 University Blvd. in Sugar Land, and Feb. 28 at Holiday Inn Westchase, 10609 Westpark in Houston.
