KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Kala Bowers made four 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead No. 12 Texas to a 63-61 victory over Kansas in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament Tuesday.

Stacy Stephens had 11 points and 17 rebounds for Texas (20-8), which outrebounded Kansas 46-34.

KC Hilgenkamp scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half, and Selena Scott added 16 points for Kansas (5-25).

Bowers made three consecutive shots, including two 3-pointers, late in the second half. She made one free throw with 3.1 seconds left to give Texas its final two-point margin.

Scott and Hilgenkamp missed baskets in the final minute, before Sharonne Spencer scored to pull Kansas within a point with less than 10 seconds remaining. Bowers restored a two-point lead with a free throw.

The Longhorns rallied from a 34-30 halftime deficit by scoring the first 12 points of the second half. Texas also limited the Jayhawks to just four points in the 10:24 of the second half.

The Jayhawks, winless in the conference this season, never trailed in the first half. Kansas used a 14-1 run midway through the first half to take a 28-14 lead.

Texas countered with its own 14-1 run, cutting the lead to 28-27 with a minute remaining in the half.

The Longhorns will play No. 13 Kansas State in Wednesday's second round.
