State gas tax will rise 1.6 cents a gallon
The state’s motor fuels tax will rise from 28 cents a gallon to 29.6 cents effective Jan. 1, a rate that will remain in effect through June 30, 2019, the Department of Revenue stated Friday.
The rate is automatically adjusted to comply with the provisions of legislation enacted in 2015 that gradually increased the state gas tax rate from 27 cents per gallon.
The gas tax increase was enacted by the Legislature to provide additional funding to help complete expressways and replace rural bridges as part of the roads program.
The state’s gas tax has three components, reflecting the wholesale price of fuel and legislative appropriations for transportation, as well as a fixed tax set by state law.
