Rayburn JROTC team sweeps championship
The Sam Rayburn High School JROTC Texan Battalion recently earned another title at the recent U.S. Open Raider Challenge Championships in San Antonio.
The 12-student team was named champion in the co-ed division in competition last month against 45 teams from 14 school districts and all military services throughout the southwestern United States, according to a Pasadena ISD press release.
Events included: an Army obstacle course; construction and crossing of a one-rope bridge; a 5K cross-country run; a 1-mile gauntlet run; and “the Crucible,” a series of physically demanding events requiring precise, coordinated teamwork.
Severe weather — 5 inches or more of rain accompanied by strong, steady winds and unseasonably cool temperatures — added to the challenge.
The team also earned first-place finishes in each of the competition’s five events and set a course record for the 1-mile gauntlet with a time of 6 minutes and 41 seconds.
Team members are: Byron Aguirre, Diana Calderon, Dasha Cuello, Jose Garcia, Alexus Gonzalez, Jorge Jassofuentes, Dana Morales, Oscar Moreno, Alecia Morin, Angel Pena, Kevin Poteet, Cesar Ruiz and Nelson Villatoro.
