NEW YORK (AP) _ The father of New York Yankees slugger Bernie Williams has died in Puerto Rico following a heart attack.

Bernabe Williams Sr. died overnight at 73, the Yankees said Monday. The team had no other details.

On Sunday, the younger Williams had left the team after the Yankees’ 10-5, 11-inning loss to Baltimore to return to Puerto Rico after learning his father’s condition had worsened.

Williams returned to Puerto Rico last month and missed 10 games to be with his father, who had pulmonary fibrosis, a lung condition. The older Williams had recently gone back into intensive care.

The Yankees open a six-game road trip Tuesday at Oakland.

Williams, usually a slow starter, has struggled this season, hitting .221 with three homers and 14 RBIs. He was 1-for-5 with an RBI Sunday.
