Students Angered By Cleaned-Up Mascot
ROGERS, Ark. (AP) _ The mysterious contents of a high school mascot’s pipe and jug led to a new look. But hundreds say the cleaned-up mascot just isn’t the same.
For more than 40 years, the Rogers High School mascot has been a pipe- smoking, jug-toting hillbilly Mountaineer.
School administrators removed the accessories because they thought the image was in questionable taste.
″There have been some questions raised about drug-free schools, whether that’s appropriate or not,″ Principal William King said. ″You try to be consistent about signals you send kids and it’s hard to do sometimes.″
But seniors Michelle Appleby and Cheryl Reeber say more than 500 students, administrators and alumni have signed their petition to bring back the old Mountie.
″If you look at the old Mountaineer you think of a pipe, hat and whiskey,″ Appleby said.
During Friday’s homecoming parade, several floats asked spectators to ″Save the Pipe.″ The student newspaper joined the protest with a picture showing bubbles, instead of smoke, coming out of the Mountie’s pipe.
