Crofton man killed

January 5, 2019

A 28-year-old Crofton man was killed Thursday as a result of a traffic accident in northern Cedar County.

Cedar County Sheriff Larry Koranda said Kyle Mueller died at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before noon near the intersection of Highway 81 and 898th Road.

Mueller was driving a 2012 GMC pickup southbound on Highway 81 when he turned east toward 898th Road and collided with a 1994 Peterbilt semi-trailer truck pulling an empty grain trailer. The semi-trailer was driven by Scott Howard, 28, of Norfolk.

Mueller was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, Koranda said. Howard was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the accident.

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol responded to the scene, along with Crofton Fire & Rescue, Yankton Fire and EMS and the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

The accident remains under investigation, Koranda said.
