BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 6, 2018--Affectiva, the global leader in Artificial Emotional Intelligence (Emotion AI) and GreenRoad Technologies, the leading provider of driver safety solutions, today announced their partnership to enable real-time driver impairment monitoring for fleet management. GreenRoad will use Affectiva Automotive AI, the first multi-modal in-cabin AI sensing solution, to detect signs of potentially dangerous driving behavior, such as drowsiness and distraction, and to alert the driver in real-time to prevent incidents.

“At GreenRoad, we’re on a mission to improve driver behavior and fleet safety,” commented Ron Levin, Chief Technology Officer of GreenRoad Technologies. “ Ninety-four percent of crashes are due to driver errors, and driver impairments, such as fatigue and distraction, play a major part in those errors. Affectiva’s groundbreaking technology will give us critical insights into these dangerous conditions, helping us to prevent collisions and continuously improve fleet safety with ongoing change management.”

GreenRoad’s driver behavior technology is used by hundreds of organizations in the bus and coach, utilities, oil and gas and other industries to improve the safety and efficiency of their fleets. GreenRoad’s in-vehicle systems detect over 150 dangerous and complex driving maneuvers, and alert drivers in real-time to self-correct. The systems incentivize better driving and road safety, while contextual information enables fleet managers to focus training efforts more effectively, reducing collision frequency and severity.

Affectiva Automotive AI will be integrated with GreenRoad’s Video™ Solution, which uses driver-facing cameras to monitor for driver impairment. Affectiva’s software solution monitors drivers’ facial and vocal expressions to detect complex and nuanced cognitive and emotional states, including drowsiness and distraction, by measuring key indicators such as yawning, blink rate, eye closure and head pose.

When dangerous driving behavior is detected, the system will warn the driver in real-time through alerts and prompts to correct the behavior. Video clips of safety events will be uploaded to GreenRoad Central™, GreenRoad’s cloud-based management portal, for review by fleet managers and drivers. GreenRoad’s change management methodology encourages a continuous self-correction cycle across safety events of all types, improving fleet safety over time.

“For companies that rely on fleet vehicles for daily operations, drivers have an important role to play. But, this means that drivers need to be alert and attentive behind the wheel for hours at a time,” added Dr. Rana el Kaliouby, Co-Founder and CEO, Affectiva. “By proactively identifying signs of potentially dangerous driving behavior, Emotion AI can significantly improve the safety of drivers, fleets, and others on the road, flagging problematic behavior before it’s too late. We’re excited to partner with GreenRoad to improve road safety in a way that was previously unimaginable, arming fleet managers and drivers with the tools they need to safely get from point A to point B during every trip.”
