Gilbert Sentenced to Death in Oklahoma Slaying

January 10, 1996

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ A man convicted of killing a security guard during a cross-country crime spree was sentenced to death Tuesday.

Judge Tom Lucas sentenced Lewis Gilbert, 24, in the death of Roxy Ruddell, a Lake Stanley Draper security guard who was found fatally shot in September 1994. Death sentences in Oklahoma are automatically appealed.

Gilbert still faces charges of killing three other people in 1994 as he and Eric Elliott, 18, made their way from Newcomerstown, Ohio, to the desert outside Santa Fe, N.M., where they were captured as they slept. A pickup truck owned by Ms. Ruddell was found nearby.

A jury recommended death when it convicted Gilbert on Nov. 6.

Lucas denied a motion for a new trial as Gilbert’s lawyers argued he was not competent to be sentenced. Gilbert also received consecutive life sentences for aggravated kidnapping and robbery with a firearm.

Elliott faces a preliminary hearing Jan. 18 in Ms. Ruddell’s death.

The two are suspected in the disappearance of Ruth Loader of Port Washington, Ohio, and the deaths of Flossie and William Brewer of Kingdom City, Mo.
