June 3 Likely Date For Presidential Runoff Election
LIMA, Peru (AP) _ The presidential runoff election between novelist Mario Vargas Llosa and agricultural engineer Alberto Fujimori will probably be held June 3, the National Election Board says.
Official results of the April 8 general elections will be announced over the weekend, board spokesman Juan Chavez Molina said in a radio interview on Friday.
Peru’s constitution says at least four weeks must elapse between the release of the official vote count and the runoff election.
Fujimori won a surprising 30 percent of the vote to Vargas Llosa’s 32 percent in the April 8 balloting, and recent polls suggest Fujimori now has a strong lead.
Both candidates have been in virtual seclusion since the April election. Vargas Llosa’s aides have said he will probably begin campaigning next week.
