Dress For Success With Penguins Forward Ben Sexton

For hockey players, the equipment they wear is just as important as the skills they possess. This week, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Ben Sexton talked about the gear he uses on the ice. Skates Brand and model: I use Bauer Vapors. My profile is kind of dull — I like a lot of glide. I use black Step Steel. Preferred fit: I like tight fit, big tongue, shot blockers. A lot of players last year told me they didn’t like shot blockers because they felt too bulky. I was lucky enough that the guy in Belleville gave me a pair that goes right on the skate. I don’t notice them at all. Sticks Brand and model: CCM Jetspeed Flex rating: 90 — I have a high kick point because I hold my hands close together. So, it whips a little higher than most shafts. Curve: I use a P92 with a little bit more toe. How many do you like to keep ready? Usually, guys have four on the rack. I’m not picky. As long as they’re on my rack, they’re good enough for me. Do you do any special maintenance with them? Usually, I have two in the rotation for a game and two on the back burner. I tape both of those before the game. Just the bottoms, never the top. I use grip tape up top and white tape down below. Show a little heel. Apparel When you’re suiting up for a game, do you have any special routine or pattern you follow? Not really. I usually like to get here early, get all my stuff done with before meetings. Stay loose playing a little sewer ball with the guys. What number did you wear growing up? I had No. 4 for most of my minor hockey career, and then once I went to junior I was kind of all over the map. I wore 21 one year, 23. I wore 74 in college, wore 14 in college. I wore 34 my first year pro, 14 my second year pro, 16 my third year pro, 26 my fourth year pro. I really don’t care (what number I have); I’m not superstitious at all like that. What is your favorite hockey sweater other than your own? I think those new Anaheim Ducks jerseys are pretty sharp; I saw them the other day. I had a Daniel Alfredsson jersey growing up with the old Senators logo that was pretty cool. If the team is going on a road trip, do you like to have anything besides hockey equipment with you? As long as there’s a deck of cards and enough guys to play, I love playing cards on the bus with the guys. It’s a great way to bond and kill time. And then as long as I have my cell phone, wallet and, potentially, passport, I’m all set. — TYLER PICCOTTI
