Undated (AP) _ PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia (AP) - East German skiers finished 1-2 in the women’s 20-kilometer World Nordic Skiing Cup event at Nove Mesto Na Morave Saturday, the news agency CTK reported.

Simone Opitz won in one hour and 00.34.0 seconds, ahead of teammate Gaby Nestler who was clocked in 1:01:42.2, showing the strength of the East German girls this winter.

Norway’s Marianne Dahlmo was third in 1:01:45.1, ahead of Evi Kratzer of Switzerland, whose time was 1:01:48.9.

Finland’s Marjo Matikainen was fifth in 1:02:10.9. But she managed to retain the intermediate World Cup lead with 57 points after four events, ahead of Dahlmo, 51 and Nestler, 45.


ANTERSELVA, Italy (AP) - Peter Angerer of West Germany on Saturday won a 10-kilometer biathlon race counting for the world championship.

Angerer, who finished fourth in Thursday’s 20-kilometer cross-country course, was in fine form under ideal skiing weather with the temperature around 54 degrees.

Angerer was timed in 30 minutes, 42.3 seconds with one penalty minute. Andrej Nepein of the Soviet Union finished second in 30:47 with no penalty minutes. Third was Gisle Fenne of Norway in 30:47.2 and no penalty minutes.

In the 10-kilometer women’s competition counting for the European championship, Norway’s Sanna Groenlid finished first in 21:28. She was followed by Eva Korpela of Sweden with 22:53.6 and Katri Tuomaala of Finland, 23:07.2.


LONDON (AP) - Nottingham Forest scored two late goals and upset Manchester United 3-2 Saturday as United’s lead in the First Division soccer standings of the English League was cut to two points.

Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea, the three pursuing teams, all won convincingly to close the gap. Everton posted a 2-0 victory at Birmingham, Liverpool beat West Ham 3-1 and Chelsea triumphed at West Bromwich Albion 3-0.

Two goals by Jesper Olsen gave Manchester a 2-1 lead before Colin Walsh’s second goal tied the match for Forest. Nigel Clough, son of Forest Manager Brian Clough, won the game on a header with two minutes left.

Manchester United has 55 points, followed by Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea with 53 each.
