Highway 178 reopens after heavy rains caused collapse
TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — A section of north Mississippi’s Highway 178 that partially collapsed earlier this year amid heavy rains has reopened.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the state Department of Transportation will continue to work alongside the road, but traffic is being allowed through the area. The Journal says the highway stretch’s long closure meant a nearby road used as a detour route needs significant repairs.
Many drivers used County Road 1310 as a detour, despite efforts to prevent it. The county had posted signs along 1310 that said only local traffic should use the road. But the signs and posted law officers didn’t stop heavy traffic from degrading the ailing secondary route further.
District 5 Supervisor Billy Joe Holland says portions of 1310 will be resurfaced later this year.
