Two-Time Liver Transplant Patient Has Baby
BALTIMORE (AP) _ A woman who underwent two liver transplant operations while she was pregnant has given birth to a boy, Johns Hopkins Hospital officials said.
Martha Maynor, 21, gave birth Friday to Matthew James Maynor by Caesarian section. Both were in good condition on Saturday, said hospital spokeswoman Debbie Bangledorf.
Matthew, 10 weeks premature, weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces.
Ms. Maynor was about 22 weeks pregnant when she had the first liver transplant July 27. A second liver was transplanted three days later when the first failed. Ms. Maynor’s own liver was destroyed by the Hepatitus B virus.
Doctors said they had no way of knowing how the fetus would respond to the anti-rejection drugs his mother was taking.
Hospital officials said the baby was delivered after tests indicated the fetus had stopped growing and complications were likely if the pregnancy continued.
