Locals rally for reproductive rights, against ban
Signs with messages like “Stop abortion bans” and “My body, my choice” were seen at the Mason County Courthouse Tuesday during a community protest of bills banning abortions by dilation and evacuation in the second trimester of a pregnancy.
The bills dub the procedure with the anti-abortion term “dismemberment” and would ban the practice of dilation and evacuation except in situations when a mother’s life is at risk.
The bill was recently proposed in the state senate and supported by 35th District State Sen. Curt VanderWall, R-Ludington, and it was also passed in the state house with the support of 101st District Rep. Jack O’Malley, R-Lake Ann. Gov. Whitmer said she will veto it.
Similar legislation was proposed in Alabama, Missouri and Ohio.
“We are here to protect the reproductive freedom of women in Michigan,” said Diann Neil Engblade of Ludington.
