GATE CITY, Va. (AP) — Authorities say sheriff's deputies shot and wounded a man in an exchange of gunfire at a Virginia home.

Virginia State Police said in a statement that Scott County sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call about a violent person at a Gate City home Tuesday night.

Police say deputies obtained an emergency custody order for a 49-year-old man and were met at the door by a man with a handgun. Police say he refused to drop the gun, then stepped outside and fired at deputies. Deputies returned fire and police say the man was struck once.

The man is being treated at a Tennessee hospital for a non-life-threatening injury. None of the deputies was injured.

Maj. Chris Holder of the sheriff's office says the deputies will undergo mandatory counseling.
