Cheeks Names Blazers’ Assistants
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ First-year Portland Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks filled out his coaching staff Thursday by hiring Caldwell Jones and Herb Brown as assistants.
Jones played in the NBA and ABA for 17 years, mostly with Philadelphia. He spent four seasons with the Blazers, from 1985-89.
Brown spent the last two seasons as an assistant to Philadelphia coach Larry Brown, his younger brother. Herb Brown also coached the Detroit Pistons in the late 1970s.
The other assistants on the Blazers are former NBA coach Jim Lynam and former CBA coach Jim Panaggio.
The Blazers are in the middle of two-a-day practices, and play their first preseason game Tuesday night in Memphis.
