CAS orders Lille to compensate Genk for Origi transfer

June 15, 2015

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ordered Lille to pay 300,000 euros ($337,000) to Genk for signing Belgium forward Divock Origi when he was 15.

CAS says its panel overturned a February 2014 ruling by FIFA that Genk was not entitled to compensation for training Origi.

The legal case began before Lille sold Origi to Liverpool in a 10 million pound ($15 million) transfer following the 2014 World Cup. Origi, now 20, signed a professional contract with Lille in 2010.

Genk argued that it was prevented by national laws from offering an equivalent contract to a minor.

Origi has not played for Liverpool, which loaned him back to Lille last season.
