Geneva 60, Minnesota-Morris 50
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Troy Nesmith scored a game-high 24 points Wednesday to lead Geneva past Minnesota-Morris 60-50 in a first-round game at the NAIA men’s tournament.
Nesmith scored 14 points in the first half to lead the Tornadoes (26-5) to a 27-16 halftime lead. Geneva built its lead up to 48-28 midway through the second half before the Cougars (20-9) rallied to trail 54-49 with 2:16 left.
A basket by Nesmith 30 seconds later ended the Cougars’ comeback bid.
Todd Hanson led Minnesota-Morris with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Poor shooting plagued both teams as Geneva sank 40 percent (19-47) of its field goal attempts while Minnesota-Morris made only 26 percent (14-54).
The victory was the third for Geneva in seven NAIA tournament appearances. Geneva advances to play top-seeded Belmont of Tennessee in the second round Thursday night.
