10,00 People Jog To Protest Child Prostitution

November 14, 1993

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) _ More than 10,000 people, including lawmakers and government officials, jogged through a red-light district Sunday to highlight the problem of child prostitution in Taiwan.

The one-hour jog in Taipei’s Snake Alley area was staged by Garden of Hope, a private Christian organization.

″Child prostitution is an abnormal social ill which could breed other crimes,″ Interior Minister Wu Poh-hsiung said during the jog, which raised the equivalent of $37,730 for a campaign against child prostitution.

Brothels in Snake Alley, known for prostitution for more than 300 years, were closed Sunday because of the jog.

Police estimated that there are about 30,000 child prostitutes between the ages of 12 and 18 in Taiwan. Private organizations put the number at about 60,000.
