Cameron County, cities begin sandbag distribution

Cameron County has begun distributing sandbags across the county as a precaution for the pending tropical weather headed toward the area.

The sandbags will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m and again on Thursday at the precincts barns in Brownsville, San Benito, and Harlingen. Residents and businesses will be allowed six bags each.

Here are the locations:

Precinct 1 3243 E. 14th St. (Brownsville)Precinct 2 - Due to muddy terrain at the County Precinct 2 property in Olmito, that location will be closed for sandbag distributionPrecinct 3 FM 510 and San Jose Ranch Rd. (San Benito)Precinct 4 201 N. T St. (Harlingen)

In addition, to filling sandbags, county crews have been prepping water pumps in the event they need to be deployed in impacted areas of the county.

“Because we anticipate some rain in the area, we need to be prepared. Our crews are preparing and are ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice if necessary,” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño.

HARLINGEN DISTRIBUTES SANDBAGS

THe City of Harlingen announced today sandbags are being made available to all residents and businesses.

City workers began distributing free sandbags this morning at 11 a.m. at the Public Works Facility located at 404 South 54th Street.

The bags are pre-filled so residents will simply have to show identification and a current water bill to procure the bags. City officials will load the bags at the drive-through, and residents will be allowed six bags and businesses 12.

Sandbag operations will run through 7 p.m. this evening and resume tomorrow at 8 a.m.

SAND AND BAGS GIVEN OUT IN SAN BENITO

The City of San Benito has begun handing out sandbags today at the City Shop 925 W. Stenger. Residents will be allowed six bags per household and businesses will be given 10. You will need a proof of ID.

If you don’t want to wait in line for the bags, the city has placed mounds of sand in front of the police department at 601 N. Williams Road and the fire department at 1201 S. Sam Houston Blvd. where you can fill your own sand bags.

RANCHO VIEJO OFFERING SAND, BAGS TO RESIDENTS

The Town of Rancho Viejo will have sandbags available for residents from noon to 7 p.m. today and again on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents must show a valid ID and/or utility bill. They will be given eight bags each to fill on their own. You must bring your own shovel.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND ISSUES REENTRY PASSES

The Island is issuing reentry passes and sandbags to area residents. They will be available until Friday at City Hall, 4601 Padre Blvd.

PORT ISABEL DISTRIBUTION LOCATION

The City of Port Isabel is making sandbags available today until 5 p.m. at 217 W. Hickman St. Each household is limited to six bags. No closures or evacuations have been ordered and no shelters have been opened at this time.
