Fan violence: Nissan cuts ties with Brazilian club

December 17, 2013

SAO PAULO (AP) — Japanese automaker Nissan says it will drop its sponsorship of Brazilian club Vasco da Gama because of fan violence.

Nissan in Brazil released a statement Monday saying the decision followed “unacceptable acts of violence” involving Vasco fans.

Hundreds of Vasco fans fought Atletico Paranaense supporters in the stands on Dec. 8, leaving four people injured.

Nissan said “these acts of violence are incompatible with the values and principles supported and defended by the company across the world.”

A four-time Brazilian champion, Vasco lost the game 5-1 and was relegated to the second division for the second time in five years.

The planned four-year sponsorship deal had been signed in July.
