Library not open? No problem with online resources

September 4, 2018

Columbus Public Library being closed Sunday and Monday for the Labor Day holiday weekend kept people out of the building, but area residents with library cards were still able to access library resources online!

Those with existing cards can create wish lists of books they’d like to read next or movies they want to watch, renew items they’ve checked out, stream and download music, listen to audiobooks, read ebooks or even start learning a new language.

Start on the library’s page of the city website: www.columbusne.us/library and click the Catalog link. On this site, the library’s catalog, you can log in to your library account with your card number and a PIN. If you don’t know your PIN, call the library at 402-564-7116 and we can look it up for you.

Once logged in you can renew items you have checked out and place holds on items that are checked out by others. Placing a hold means you’ll be notified when an item is returned and then we hold it at the front desk for a week so you can come check it out. On our catalog, you can also create lists. I have lists of books I’d like to read or listen to, sorted by genre, so I can choose one that appeals to me at the time.

From the Catalog site, you can access all of our online resources by using the list of links on the left side of the homepage, or by clicking Digital Library to see descriptions of each resource. Overdrive, RB Digital Books, Cloud Library and Freading all offer ebooks and/or audiobooks that can be accessed via a web browser (like Chrome or Internet Explorer) or downloaded to your device. For these resources, I recommend downloading the corresponding app from your device’s app store, as they have been formatted for use on your device and will make using them much easier.

Other Digital Library resources that can be used via a web browser or app include RB Digital Magazines, Freegal Music, and Mango Languages. RB Digital Magazines has current and back issues of popular and special interest magazines that can be downloaded indefinitely. Freegal Music offers thre hours of streaming each day and five songs each week that you can download and keep. Mango Languages has more than 60 language courses, including courses for English language learners.

All of these resources are free to use with a Columbus Public Library card, and library cards are free to those who live, work or attend school in Platte County. For those of you who do not have a library card, stop by today with a valid photo ID and proof of address to sign up for your free library card. Those who qualify by working or attending school will also need to show proof of employment or enrollment to get their free library card.

Karen Connell is a reference librarian at Columbus Public Library.
