WESTCONN ROUNDUP Big wins for WestConn field hockey, volleyball teams
DANBURY — Morgan Matthews scored three goals as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team defeated Regis College 4-0 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Matthews, a Bethel High School graduate, scored off an assist from Allie Noteware of New Milford 7:57 in to put the Colonials ahead to stay. Nora Swift of Brookfield made it 2-0 WestConn about 12 minutes later off a pass from Kimberly Brower of Mahopac, N.Y. Matthews added two goals in the second half, one off a pass from Shannon Lynch of Sandy Hook and one off an assist from Brower.
“Morgan is a dangerous player who is hard to cover,” WestConn coach Dani McDonnell said in a press release. “She and Carly (Matasavage) led us in scoring a year ago, and she is off to a good start this year.”
WestConn goalie Neve Manion of Newington earned the win with one save in nearly 66 minutes of work. Former Westhill High standout Samantha Ripegno saw four minutes of action and didn’t make a save.
The Colonials are scheduled to visit William Paterson at 1 p.m. Sunday.

“I thought we played well tonight. Our passing was consistent and our blocking showed improvement,” WestConn coach Don Ferguson said in a press release. “We have a lot of returning players and they displayed some growth from last year.”
Action is set to continue Saturday in the Colonial Classic, with WestConn scheduled to face Salve Regina at 10 a.m. and Simmons at 2 p.m.
DANBURY — WestConn lost to Vassar College 1-0 in the season opener for both teams. Mattie Mrlik scored the lone goal unassisted with nine seconds remaining in the first half. WestConn goalkeepers Luca DiCarlo of Waterbury and Daniel Szabo of Trumbull split the game and made two saves apiece. Vassar goalkeeper Will Marment of Stamford made six saves.

TROY, N.Y. — Jacqui Richard scored two second-half goals as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute rallied for a 2-1 victory over WestConn in the season opener for both schools in the RPI Tournament. Jenna Barron of New Milford scored the lone goal for the Colonials.
“This was a good challenge for us today,” WestConn coach Alex Harrison said in a press release. “We are going to have to win games by not giving up goals this season. Our offense has a completely new look and it will take time for us to get in sync.”
WestConn goalkeeper Alexis Lainchbury of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., made nine saves.
Tournament action is set to continue Saturday, with WestConn facing Buffalo State at 11 a.m.
