Windy Hill firefighters rescue three boaters off Great Pee Dee River
MARION, S.C. -- Three teens are safe and on dry land after the boat they were in suffered mechanical failure.
Windy Hill firefighters were called out about 8:40 a.m. to a report of a boater in distress on the Great Pee Dee River at the Interstate 95 bridge.
Firefighters put in their rescue boat at the US 76 landing and headed upstream against a flood current.
Firefighters were able to tow the boat and the teen back to the landing and off the river about 11 a.m.
Thought initial reports were that people had ended up in the river, Windy Hill Fire Chief John DeLung said that didn’t appear to be the case.
Florence County Sheriff’s deputies along with Raptor 1 responded in mutual aid along with medics with Florence County EMS, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources agents and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
