Baraboo wine bar adds music, pizza
Live music and flatbread pizza are now on the menu at Con Amici Wine Bar.
The downtown Baraboo destination is becoming a music venue, regularly welcoming local performers. The entertainment continues Saturday evening with a concert by Never Odd or Even.
Co-owner Laura Hamdan-Krause said acts like Gin, Chocolate and Bottle Rockets have filled the bar. “We’ve got great groups coming in that bring big crowds,” she said.
The concert series was the brainchild of Nellie Schmitz of NextLevel Creative, who’s handling marketing for Con Amici. She said there’s a healthy local appetite for live music, and a dearth of venues offering it. “Nobody’s doing it around here,” Schmitz said.
She’s working to let the public know the bar offers more than wine. It also serves beer and spirits, as well as food such as cheese and bread. Con Amici recently added flatbread pizza.
“The place is picking up,” Schmitz said. “I think it needed a little injection of fun going on, because it’s got everything else.”
Hamdan-Krause, who owns the Third Street wine bar with husband Mark Hamdan-Krause, credited Schmitz with revitalizing Con Amici. “She’s the one who’s getting it done,” Laura Hamdan-Krause said. “She’s well-connected.”
On Thursday, longtime Circus World pianist Larry Stout brought a combo to the wine bar. Next up are local favorites such as Dennis Reifsteck (Thursday) and Marc LaMere (Dec. 12). Dead Henry and Beautiful Buzz will perform later in the month. Meanwhile, the “house musician,” pianist Joe Veit, will fill in the gaps. The bar posts concert updates to its Facebook page. It doesn’t impose cover charges for music shows.
Con Amici is hosting special events in addition to music. These range from trivia nights to “Spirit Nights” featuring tarot card readers and fortune tellers.
Schmitz said she hopes special events will entertain regular customers and attract new ones. “We value what they bring to the place,” she said.
