Cape Lookout invites stargazers to summer astronomy nights
Stargazers are invited to three summer astronomy nights with special programs on Cape Lookout National Seashore.
The first event is Saturday from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Harkers Island Visitor Center. The evening begins with a presentation from NASA Solar System Ambassador Lisa Pelletier-Harmon called Celestial Navigation Along the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
After the presentation, park staff and local astronomers will help those in attendance discover the night sky above the Southern Outer Banks through telescopes set up along the shore
The event is free and open to all ages.
The parks service recommends people come prepared for the weather and bring water, snacks, bug repellent and flashlight with a red filter that helps in maintaining everyone’s night vision.
Telescopes will be available for viewing, but people can also bring their own equipment.
Additional astronomy nights are scheduled for Saturday, June 22, and Saturday, July 20.
