Parade, Santa in the Park coming

November 14, 2018

Christmas activities in Friendswood will kick off Dec. 8 with the Santa in the Park festival from 3-8 p.m. in Stevenson Park and a 6 p.m. parade.

Presented by the city of Friendswood and the Keep Friendswood Beautiful organization, the 11th annual Santa in the Park will feature photos with Santa Claus, food and beverages, music, fireworks and a holiday market.

“To me, it is an opportunity to really get into the Christmas spirit early,” city spokesman Jeff Newpher said. “Typically, it is cold that night, and people dress up in holiday costumes, and there is holiday music.”

About 50 entries are expected in the parade, which will travel Friendswood Drive from Heritage Park to Stevenson Park, 1100 S. Friendswood Drive, said Diane Hass, membership coordinator for the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce, which is the parade sponsor.

The deadline to sign up for the parade is Dec. 6. Call 281-996-3220 or visit www.ci.friendswood.tx.us for an application.

Admission to Santa in the Park and live entertainment is free. A wristband, $10 the day of the event, must be purchased for some amusements, including the snow hill slides, rock wall, bungee jumps, petting zoo, mechanical bull, moonwalks, train rides and face painting. Half-price tickets for the additional activities are available by taking an unwrapped toy to the Parks and Recreation Department at Friendswood City Hall, 910 S. Friendswood Drive, between Nov. 26 and Dec. 7 to donate to the Blue Santa program and get a Santa in the Park wristband, Hass said.

The Blue Santa program, which is operated by the Friendswood Police Department and Police Officers Association, provides gifts for children whose families are struggling to make ends meet.

The snow hill is 12 feet high, with 40,000 pounds of snow, he said.

Santa Claus, who will arrive on a fire truck, will invite children to help him with the tree lighting at 7:30 p.m., which triggers a fireworks display.

Everything has a holiday theme,” Newpher said.

Throughout the day, a local band, The Slags, will perform in Stevenson Park. The group’s set list included everything from today’s hits to classic from the past.

The main sponsor for Santa in the Park is HomeTown Bank of Friendswood.
