18 Mexican Prisoners Flee, 4 Nabbed

November 4, 1999

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Authorities recaptured only four of 18 prisoners who fled from captivity through a 140-foot-long tunnel in the northern state of Durango.

Most of those who escaped around 2:30 p.m. from the prison in Gomez Palacio apparently were serving time for drug crimes or robbery, though a few had been sentenced for kidnapping, newspapers reported.

State Deputy Attorney General Ricardo Fontecilla said investigators were interviewing the prison staff and he expected some to be prosecuted.

``There will be some who participated in committing (the escape) and there will be others who by omission participated,″ he said.

Gov. Angel Sergio Guerrero Mier said the escape was an example of the corruption plaguing Mexican prisons.
