22 North Koreans to compete in Olympics...Vonn dominates in downhill...Halep survives marathon match

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Twenty-two North Korean athletes will cross the border with South Korea to compete in the Olympics and march together under a unification flag at the opening ceremony. Under an agreement approved today, 12 North Korean women’s hockey players will form a united team with their neighbors, playing in special uniforms with a Korean song as their anthem. North Koreans will also compete in figure skating, short track speed skating, Alpine skiing and cross-country skiing.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Lindsey Vonn says her dominant win today in a World Cup downhill was exactly what she was hoping for, heading into next month’s Olympics. The American finished 0.92 seconds ahead of Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein. Vonn’s U.S. teammate Jacqueline Wiles finished third. Sofia Goggia (GOH’-jah) of Italy, the winner of the past two downhills, didin’t finish after avoiding a major crash with the help of a safety air bag.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The top women’s seed at the Australian Open needed three hours and 45 minutes to defeat unseeded American Lauren Davis. Simona Halep eventually prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 15-13, after a final set that took two hours and 22 minutes. Davis twice had medical timeouts in the final set to have blisters on both feet treated. Halep will next face 20-year-old Naomi Osaka of Japan.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks leading scorer Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KAHM’-poh) will miss the next two games to rest a sore right knee. The Bucks say the All-Star will sit out tonight’s game at Philadelphia and Monday’s home game against Phoenix. That will give him eight days off before his planned return Friday at home against Brooklyn.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA’s Division II has voted to allow colleges and universities in Mexico to apply for membership, effective immediately. No Mexican schools have applied yet, and any that do would be required to complete a three-year provisional period before becoming a full member. Division I and Division III schools will not be affected.
