SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Houston third baseman Ken Caminiti was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained right calf muscle.

Caminiti hurt himself stealing a base in Friday night's 4-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

The Astros recalled infielder Daryle Ward to fill Caminiti's roster spot. Ward, who was batting .339 in 42 games at Triple-A New Orleans, will join the Astros in San Francisco in time for Sunday's series final.

Caminiti, batting .292 with two home runs and 17 RBIs, was hurt while stealing second. He appeared to cramp up shortly after driving off first base and grabbed his leg in pain as he neared second, managing to slide around shortstop Rich Aurilia's tag to complete the steal.

Caminiti limped off the field and into the club house for treatment.

``It's pretty sore. I'm having a hard time walking,'' Caminiti said after the game. ``I'm having a hard time with this because I wanted to come back and have a healthy year. Now this same old stuff, it's just kind of making me mad right now.''
