DA: Colorado Springs officers justified in fatal shooting
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors say two police officers were justified when they shot and killed a man during a confrontation in Colorado Springs.
The Gazette reports police were responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment April 24 when they realized the suspect, 29-year-old Jonathan Patzel, was wanted for escaping the custody of the Colorado Department of Corrections.
The officers broke down the door because Patzel refused to come out and they noticed smoke seeping out of the apartment. Patzel was shot when officers say he charged at them with his hands above his head.
Investigators say they found a butcher knife in the entry hall where the confrontation took place.
According to the district attorney’s office, the officers were justified in shooting Patzel because they believed he was going to attack them.
