The Latest: Freeway reopens after fatal crash, hit-and-run

November 16, 2018

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The Latest on a fatal freeway crash (all times local):

10:55 a.m.

Authorities say a Mesa freeway reopened Friday after a partial closure during the entire morning commute due to a fatal wreck that involved a hit-and-run following the initial wreck.

Trooper Kameron Lee said a flatbed truck’s driver was killed after being ejected from his vehicle when it overturned at Higley Road and then being struck by another truck that went through the accident scene without stopping.

Lee says the flatbed truck rolled when it struck an abandoned car on the shoulder.

Lee says traffic was clogged as eastbound vehicles exited the freeway on the Higley Road off-ramp and then used the on-ramp to re-enter the freeway during the closure.

The closure lasted about six hours.

The state Department of Public says a fatal accident that has closed part of the eastbound U.S. 60 freeway in Mesa during the Friday morning commute also involves a hit-and-run that followed the initial wreck.

Trooper Kameron Lee says a flatbed truck’s driver was killed after being ejected from his vehicle when it overturned at Higley Road and then being struck by another truck that went through the accident scene without stopping.

Lee says the flatbed truck rolled when it struck an abandoned car on the shoulder.

Lee says traffic was clogged as eastbound vehicles exited on the Higley off-ramp and then used the on-ramp to re-enter U.S. 60 and that there was no estimate when the freeway will reopen.

The Department of Transportation says drivers should consider alternate routes.
