Second Inning Sinks Spinners

July 28, 2018

LOWELL -- A nightmarish second inning cost the Lowell Spinners a chance to improve their New York-Penn League record.

State College 9, Lowell 3

The Spinners allowed five runs in the top of the second en route to taking a 9-3 loss to visiting State College on Friday night at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell (21-19) trailed 7-0 after three innings and never threatened. The Spinners were held to a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh. State College held an 11-9 hit advantage and the Spinners committed the only two errors of the contest.

In the sixth, with Lowell trailing 7-0, Tyler Dearden continued his hot hitting by launching a double to right field. After Grant Williams popped out, Jonathan Ortega walked. Jarren Duran then singled to center to move Dearden to third. Xavier LeGrant hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Dearden.

In the seventh, Jake Romanski ripped a double to right field. Kole Cottam then doubled to center to drive in Romanski. Dearden picked up an RBI with a single which scored Cottam.

But that’s as close as Lowell got.

State College improved to 16-23.

The Spinners return to action Saturday by hosting State College at 5:30 p.m. The Spinners are two games out of first place in the Stedler Division.
