Sore Hamstring Bothers Steelers’ Burress

December 4, 2004

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress remains bothered by a sore hamstring that caused him to miss nearly all of this week’s practices for Sunday night’s game in Jacksonville.

Burress, who sat out last Sunday’s game against Washington, tried to practice Thursday but was not able to finish and also missed practice time Friday night. He remains listed as questionable, meaning there is a 50-50 chance he will play.

If Burress can’t play, Antwaan Randle El will replace him in the starting lineup. Randle El’s two long punt returns keyed the 16-7 victory over Washington, but he was held to two catches for 37 yards.

Running back Duce Staley, out for four games with a bruised hamstring, practiced again Friday and is probable. He is expected to start Sunday for Jerome Bettis, who had four consecutive 100-yard games during Staley’s absence.

Backup running back Verron Hayes (knee) was downgraded from questionable to doubtful following Friday night’s practice and is unlikely to play.
