Reds’ Reese Will Need Hand Surgery

July 30, 1998

CINCINNATI (AP) _ Cincinnati Reds infielder Pokey Reese tore a ligament in his right thumb while diving for a ball Thursday and will need surgery.

Reese will be out for six to 10 weeks following the operation to repair the ulnar lateral ligament. Third baseman Aaron Boone is expected to be called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

Reese, playing third base, dove towards the line and caught his thumb on the artificial turf while trying to get Javy Lopez’s double in the fifth inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

He came up shaking his hand, made a few practice throws and then left the game for a medical exam that found the tear.

Reese, a shortstop throughout his minor league career, has been relegated to backup status since Barry Larkin returned from neck surgery. Reese has started one game at second, 24 at third and 13 at shortstop.
