Syracuse 95, West Virginia 78

STORRS, Conn. (AP) _ Teakyta Barnes scored 21 points and Syracuse held West Virginia to six field goals in the first half on the way to a 95-78 win over the Mountaineers in the first round of the Big East tournament Saturday.

Barnes scored 13 of her points in the first half for the No. 6 seed Syracuse (14-13) , which held 11th-seeded West Virginia (12-15) scoreless from the field in the first five minutes.

Talisha Hargis scored 21 of her 23 points in the second half for the Mountaineers, but her heroics were not enough to help her team to recover after falling behind 43-23 by halftime.

Kristen McCrory 12 of her 17 points in the second half for Syracuse, which never let West Virginia closer than 15 points after intermission. Raquel Nurse added 15 points and Carmen Glover had 13.

Isle Opstaele added 14 points for West Virginia. Lisa Szymczak and Rebecca Burbridge each had 12 and Maria Tchobanova had 10 for the Mountaineers.
