Astros try to extend home playoff win streak...Baseball commissioner ‘confident’ balls meet specs
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros haven’t lost at home this postseason and they’ll try to keep it that way when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight in Game 4 of the World Series. Charlie Morton pitches for Houston against left-hander Alex Wood. The Astros lead the series two games to one.
HOUSTON (AP) — The whopping number of home runs this year has led to speculation that something is different about the balls Major League Baseball is using. But Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says he is “absolutely confident” that the balls “are within our established specifications.” The regular season saw a record 6,105 home runs, and on Wednesday a World Series record eight homers were hit in Houston’s 11-inning win. Afterward, Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) was quoted as saying: “Obviously, the balls are juiced.”
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Tennessee says defensive end Darrell Taylor will be available to play today at Kentucky after being suspended for the Volunteers’ last two games. The school also announced that backup quarterback Quinten Dormady, who didn’t make the trip to Kentucky, is expected to have season-ending shoulder surgery next week.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin says the school hasn’t had any conversations with embattled coach Jim McElwain or his representatives regarding a contract buyout. Stricklin’s statement today was in response to a tweet from a sports lawyer that quoted an anonymous source saying Florida and agent Jimmy Sexton have engaged in buyout negotiations and are “miles apart.”
SOELDEN, Austria (AP) — Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany has won the season-opening women’s World Cup giant slalom in Austria, beating last year’s discipline champion Tessa Worley of France. Overall champion Mikaela (mih-KAY’-luh) Shiffrin, who was second after the opening leg, had a tough run and nearly skied out before finishing in fifth. Shiffrin’s American teammate Lindsey Vonn, who only decided a week ago that she was going to race, failed to qualify for the final run.
