Hendry, O’Connor named assistants for US collegiate team
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two members of Creighton’s 1991 College World Series team will serve as assistant coaches for the 2018 Collegiate National Team.
New York Yankees special assignment scout Jim Hendry was head coach of the ’91 Bluejays, and Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was a pitcher.
USA Baseball announced the staff Tuesday. LSU’s Paul Mainieri is manager, and East Carolina head coach Cliff Godwin and St. Thomas head coach Jorge Perez will join Hendry and O’Connor as assistants.
Hendry was the Chicago Cubs general manager from 2002-12 before joining the Yankees. He was Creighton’s head coach from 1984-91.
O’Connor is in his 15th season at Virginia and will serve as the pitching coach for Team USA. The team features top college players and will compete in international events this summer.
