BEIJING (AP) _ A long-distance bus swerved off a highway in central China, plunged into a 100-foot ravine and killed 30 passengers, several of them children, a government official said Friday.
Another 19 people, including the driver, were injured in the accident Thursday night in Feng County, Shaanxi province, said a county official, who gave his name only as Mr. Wang.
The bus, which had bunks for passengers to sleep on, was traveling to Shaanxi’s capital, Xi’an, from Longnan County in the neighboring province of Gansu.
``Most passengers were people doing business between the two cities,″ Wang said by telephone.
He said the dead include four or five children, and that the cause of the accident is still under investigation. ``We have not been able to determine if the driver is responsible,″ Wang said.
