Crusaders beat Hurricanes 25-17 in Super Rugby

July 12, 2013

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) — The Crusaders clinched a home quarterfinal in Super Rugby with an 25-17 win over the Hurricanes on Friday but their concerted late-season bid for first place in the New Zealand conference wilted when they were denied a four-try bonus point.

Winger Zac Guildford, in the first half, scrumhalf Andy Ellis and winger Tom Marshall in the second, scored tries which clinched the Christchurch-based Crusaders’ 11th win in 16 matches — their fifth in succession — to ensure the seven-time champions will finish fourth at the end of the regular season.

They will play the fifth-placed side, likely the Queensland Reds or Bloemfontein-based Cheetahs, in Christchurch in next weekend’s quarterfinals.
