Sheriff’s Department ID’s two killed in Sunday crash
NEEDLES — The San Berndardo County Sheriff’s Department has released the identities of two people killed in a multiple-vehicle accident Sunday morning on Needles Highway.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, a division of the sheriff’s department, stated Monday in a press release that Lavon Salabye, 34, from Window Rock, Ariz., and Dolores Garcia, 48, from Anaheim, Calif., died.
Three other people were transported from the site for medical treatment — two by air and the third by ground ambulance, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred around 8:53 a.m. Sunday on Needles Highway, between Laughlin and Needles, south of the Aha Macav Parkway just across the California state line.
The CHP said Salabye, the driver of a 2018 Chrysler Caravan, failed to negotiate a curve traveling south on Needles Highway and crossed over the double yellow line into the northbound traffic lane. The Chrysler first struck the left side of a northbound 1999 Dodge Ram. A 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, approaching from the north behind the Chrysler, avoided being hit by the Chrysler because its driver was able to veer off the highway.
No one in the Dodge or Chevrolet was injured. The Chevrolet was damaged, but not by the oncoming vehicle, according to the CHP.
But another vehicle traveling north, a 2005 Honda CRV driven by Garcia, struck the Chrysler head-on. The three people injured were passengers in these vehicles.
All of the people involved were wearing seat belts, the CHP said.
The Needles office of the CHP is investigating this case.
