City council approves adding school resource officer
NORFOLK - The Norfolk City Council approved an interlocal agreement with Norfolk Public Schools to add another school resource officer.
During Monday night’s meeting, Norfolk Police Captain Don Miller told the council members the new SRO would serve primarily at the junior high and middle school.
Miller said the senior high has seen nothing but positives from its SRO Officer Dave Lichtenburg.
“In the schools we want to try and intervene whenever we can and try to prevent kids from going into the legal system. Sometimes that’s unavoidable, but if we can get them into services and stuff and reach them at an earlier age we do. In the school we call them interventions where it might be a child that’s having minor issues and they need to talk to somebody the school resource officer then can meet with them.”
Principal at Norfolk Junior High Jen Robinson said building the positive relationships in the schools will then branch out to the child’s home and the community.
The council voted unanimously to approve the agreement.
