Cleveland teen killed in road rage accident
A teenager just days away from beginning his senior year was killed in what Liberty County Sheriff’s Office officials believe was a road rage incident.
Jonathan Michael Perez, 17, of Cleveland, Texas was killed when his vehicle was struck from behind, causing his car to flip several times in the Plum Grove area off CR 3478B in north Liberty County.
According to LCSO lead investigator Jeff Ashworth, a second teen in Perez’s vehicle received minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
“Dr. Barnes, our high school principal and the CHS leadership team remember him well as a good student,” said CISD spokesperson Susan Ard.
Monday is the first day of school for Cleveland ISD and Ard said they would have counselors available for students at the high school campus.
LCSO officials said the investigation is its initial stages and few confirmed facts known.
However, LCSO officials believe that prior to the crash, the two teens may have been involved in some sort of incident that caused the road rage to escalate into the fatal crash.
An autopsy was ordered by Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Judge Ralph Fuller, and the investigation into the incident continues.
Anyone with information about the accident is urged to call the Liberty County Sheriffs Office.
