Haas Reaches U.S. Amateur Semis

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ Bill Haas, son of PGA Tour pro Jay, beat John Klauk 5 and 4 Friday, reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur.
Haas shot a 28 on the front nine to make the turn at 4 up. He’ll next face Ricky Barnes of Stockton, Calif., who beat 18-year-old Spencer Levin, of Elk Grove, Calif., 4 and 3.
The other semifinal matchup Saturday will be Hunter Mahan of McKinney, Texas, against Dustin Bray of Asheboro, N.C.
Mahan beat 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights, Calif., 3 and 2. Bray defeated Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash., 4 and 3.
The winners of the semifinals will meet in Sunday’s 36-hole final.
The U.S. Amateur winner, if he remains an amateur, gets an automatic berth into the next U.S. Open and traditionally has been invited to play in the following Masters.
