Machete slaying brings 50 years
A Fort Wayne man who killed his wife by cutting her neck with a machete was ordered Thursday to spend 50 years in prison.
Julio Rodriguez, 47, pleaded guilty in November to murder in the death of Lucia Aviles Segura, 41, inside the couple’s home on Baxter Street. He was sentenced Thursday in Allen Superior Court.
Police were called to the home about 6 a.m. May 30 and found Segura dead in the basement. Rodriguez told police he and his wife fought, he grabbed the knife and accidentally cut his wife’s throat twice.
He was charged with murder the next day.
Jose Rodriguez, Julio’s brother, called police and told them to come to the house because his sister-in-law had been killed. Julio Rodriguez said, “I think I killed my wife,” or “I just kill my wife” when police arrived, according to court documents.
The couple’s 16-year-old son was home at the time of the slaying, a probable cause affidavit said.
Julio Rodriguez told detectives he was in the basement gathering clothes for work when he and Segura began arguing, police said. He then picked up the machete and cut his wife, the affidavit alleged.
A knife blade covered in blood was found in the basement.
