Gang leader, enforcer brother sentenced in deadly shooting

September 28, 2018

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The leader of a violent southern New Jersey street gang and his brother — a gang enforcer — have each received 50-year prison sentences for their roles in a deadly street shooting.

Mykal Derry and Malik Derry were convicted of murder and conspiracy in the February 2013 death of Tyquinn James. The 25-year-old Atlantic City man was shot three times as he stood outside a city restaurant.

Authorities have said Mykal Derry ordered the deadly shooting and his brother carried it out. The sentences they received Wednesday will run concurrent to the federal life sentences they received in 2016 for other crimes.

James’ slaying is one of at least eight shootings linked to the “Dirty Blok” gang, a drug-trafficking enterprise that terrorized Atlantic City’s poor neighborhoods.
