MOSS POINT, Miss. (AP) — A first-term Mississippi mayor and his wife are each facing a misdemeanor charge after deputies were called to the couple’s home when she reported an altercation.

Moss Point Mayor Mario King and his wife, Natasha King, are charged with simple assault. They have a Dec. 11 justice court appearance.

The chief deputy in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, John Ledbetter, says in a news release Thursday that Natasha King called the department Friday to report a domestic disturbance between her and her husband in their home the previous night.

Mario King, who became mayor in July, told WXXV-TV there are “no domestic problems” between him and his wife.

The Sun Herald reported that Natasha King said in a sworn statement that her husband punched her in the arm.
