Couple Robbed of $80,000 by Gunman in Plaza Hotel
NEW YORK (AP) _ A man toting a .357-caliber Magnum followed a couple into their Plaza Hotel room, tied them up and made off with $75,000 in jewelry and $5,500 cash, police said today.
Hal Pettigrew, 38, and his wife, Mary, 39, of Arlington, Texas, were staying at the posh hotel by Central Park when the hold-up occurred Sunday night, said Sgt. Raymond O’Donnell, a police spokesman.
The Pettigrews were entering their seventh-floor room when the gunman pushed in behind Pettigrew, waving his gun, O’Donnell said. Using lamp cord and a belt, he bound the couple and removed three rings, two watches, a necklace a pendant, and the cash, the spokesman said.
The couple, who were uninjured, managed to untie themselves and call for help.
