ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Former Miami running back Lamar Smith has agreed to a three-year, $4.3 million contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Smith, an unrestricted free agent, agreed to terms Tuesday night, team spokesman Charlie Dayton said Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Smith gained 2,007 yards the past two seasons. He was a durable runner, starting 31 games and rushing 622 times.

He became expendable after the Dolphins acquired Ricky Williams in a trade with New Orleans.
